Processor

Processor is the real brain of the computer. All the processing (operations) are done in the processor. The performance (speed) of the processor is based on the number of calculations (operations) that are made within a time period.

Types:
  • Slot based
  • Socket based

  • Slot based processors
The slot based processors are used in the initial generation of computers. DIP, PLCC are the two types of slot based processors.

  • DIP - Dual Inline Package
This type of slot is used bi the DIP processor.

  • PLCC - Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier

This type of slot is used bi the PLCC processor.

Both these processors were used in the initial generations of computer.

  • Socket based processors
The socket based processors are the currently using processors. LGA and PGA are the two types of socket based processors.

  • PGA - Pin Grid Array
The processors from 8086 to the Pentium uses the PGA type of socket for connecting the processor.

  • LGA - Land Grid Array

The processors from Pentium 4 till up to date LGA type of sockets are used for connecting the processors.
    Manufacturers:
  • Intel
  • AMD
  • Cyrix (manufactured processors during DIP,PLCC's period)
