SMPS

Switch Mode Power Supply. It is a component present in the system unit(CPU). The power supply is given to the SMPS. The SMPS converts the incoming AC supply into DC supply. SMPS forwards the converted DC current to the system components.

The components falls into 3 categories which receives the power supply from SMPS. They are motors, circuits and chips. Each type of component receives different level of power:

• Motors receives +/- 12V
• Circuits receives +/- 5.5V
• Chips receives +/- 3.3V

SMPS contains many internal components:

• Heatsink - for reducing the temperature in the transformer
• Input Capacitor - to receive the incoming AC current.
• Transformer - to convert AC into DC
• Output Capacitor - to forward the DC current to the components
• Fan - to reduce the temperature inside the SMPS
